Come discover the Mount Hope Blast Iron Furnace and the “lost” Mount Hope Settlement!
Deep in the woods on the private Friends of CLN property there is a National Register-eligible, 1800s blast iron furnace. The Mount Hope Iron Furnace was in operation from 1836 to 1857, producing 4-5 tons of pig iron a day. It is the earliest of the Adirondack stone blast furnaces still surviving and is the 2nd best preserved of the 1800s blast furnaces in the region: the Tahawus Furnace being the first. In addition, the Mount Hope site is unique in the Adirondacks in that substantial remains of the Mount Hope Settlement community associated with the furnace also survived.
We offer guided historical tours to the public or can arrange private tours for groups. The Furnace Loop Trail, which goes through beautiful Adirondack woodlands, is about 2.4 miles long with an overall elevation change of only 228 ft. It typically takes between 60-90 minutes to complete the loop. Adults and children capable of completing this hike are welcome on the tour. The cost is $20 for adults (18 and up) and $10 for children ages 4-17. The trail can be wet and buggy so please wear good hiking shoes, bring bug repellent, and water! Also, the road into the CLN property is dirt with bumps and rocks. It is difficult for vehicles with low clearance.
